Food business operators in the retail and catering sector are required to provide allergen and dietary information and these requirements are set out in law.
Natasha’s Law came into effect on 1st October 2021 and pre-packed foods sold directly to the consumer must to be correctly labelled.
The following information is required: food name, full list of ingredients, allergen information.
In September 2026, Benedict's Law, is a set of protections designed to provide allergy safety within schools, will be coming into force across England. These measures ensure that schools have the policies, training and emergency medication needed to recognise and respond to severe allergic reactions. The measures were developed following the death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died from anaphylaxis at school in 2021.
The statutory guidance sets national expectations for how schools support pupils with medical conditions and allergies, while legislation will place key safeguards within the legal framework governing education.
